Additional Details

Colonel-Engineer Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova became the first woman in space on 16 June, 1963 aboard Vostok 6, in a joint flight with Vostok 5. She remained the only Russian woman to go into space until Svetlana Savitskaya 19 years later. It was chief engineer Korolev's idea just after Gagarin's Vostok 1 flight to put a woman into orbit primarily for propaganda purposes, yet it was Premier Khrushchev himself that made the final crew selection.
