Valentini, Francesco Cosma Damiano (1789-1862)
Trattato su la Commedia dell'Arte. [bound with] Abhandlung über die Comödie.

Berlin: (A.W. Schade for) Ludwig Wilhelm Wittich, 1826.

Quarto; text in German and Italian; with 20 finely colored etched plates after Heinrich Stürmer by Friedrich Jügel, Friedrich Wilhelm Schwechten and Carl Friedrich Thiele; rebound in later red morocco-backed cloth, spine decorated and lettered with gilt (light offsetting to text; a few plates slightly toned; endleaves renewed); 11 x 8 3/4 in.

This brilliantly illustrated treatise on Italian masquerades and Commedia dell 'Arte is from a lecture given by Francesco Valentini, who served as the Royal Prussian Professor of Italian Language and Literature in Berlin. The first group of plates depict specific characters from the Commedia, followed by illustrations of characters and scenes from the Roman Carnivale.
