Vanderbilt, Gloria (1924-2019)
Fishes and Flowers.

1971.

Crayon and ink on smooth wove paper, signed in ink, lower right; 708 x 555 mm; 27⅞ x 21¾ inches.

Vanderbilt was a completely self-taught artist. Her first solo show was at the Bertha Shaeffer Gallery in New York in 1953. By the time the current work was exhibited at Hammer in 1973, her work had already been the subject of three museum retrospectives. For mosaic works like this exuberantly colored example, Vanderbilt started with ink, then built up layers of crayon, coming back in with ink to add sharp graphic emphasis and outline.
