Verner may be the most well-known female artist from South Carolina. Primarily based in Charleston, she depicted scenes of everyday life in the city, often giving her subjects a strong sense of charm and dignity. She was one of the founding members of the Charleston Etchers Club in 1923. After the death of her husband in 1925, Verner began to see herself as a professional artist and sought print commissions of major cities and landmarks. Through the 1930s, she mastered different media, including pastel and sumi ink. She and Alice Smith were both major artists active in the Charleston artists' colony.
