Voragine, Jacobus de (1230-1298)
Legenda aurea sanctorum, sive Lombardica historia [Edition in German] Leben der Heiligen: Winterteil und Sommerteil; Single Leaf.

Nuremberg: Anton Koberger, 5 December, 1488.

Single folio-format leaf with large woodcut at the top colored in a contemporary hand, leaf CLXXII [172] depicting Saint Wendelin; text in two columns in German, capital strokes added in red, headline cropped away with only a few millimeters of the letters remaining, handsome coloring in tan, red, and green, marginal paper repairs, 12 3/4 x 8 1/2 in.

According to legend, Saint Wendelin, hermit and shepherd, sought far-flung meadows with his flock, searching for sufficient solitude for prayer. His master did not approve of this practice. Coming upon Wendelin and his wooly charges miles from home one day, he was angry. The monk was due back with the herd for an important dinner event. Miraculously, Wendel and the herd were delivered back to the castle before nightfall, and the master of the castle, recognizing the hand of the Almighty, built the pious shepherd his own solitary cell close to the farm. Saint Wendelin is venerated as the patron saint of country people and herdsmen.
