The flights of Vostok 5 and 6 were delayed from their original launch dates due to excessive solar flares. The cosmonauts were given an unexpected day at the beach while the scientists and engineers sought to assess the danger of launching during this unusually high solar activity. Tereshkova spent much of her time in consultation with Kamanin, the later making sure he had selected his female cosmonaut wisely. Vostok 5 launched on 14 June and Vostok 6 two days later. Tereshkova's success made headlines around the world.
