Formed in 1930, the Gdynia-America line operated passenger service between Poland and the Americas. The Batory was launched in 1936 (her sister ship Pilsudki was launched the previous year). She sailed for New York in August 1939, arriving four days after the Germans invaded Poland. In New York she was commandeered as a troop ship and served for the duration of the war. In 1950 the Gdynia-America Line changed names and became the Polish Ocean Lines, and for political reasons involving the Cold War, the ship was deemed "undesirable" and never again returned to U.S. waters.
