15 August 1963: "May I acknowledge the receipt of your Tannhäuser Schluss wondering what my son will do ???? . . ."
29 April 1970: ". . . We are not thinking of selling any items of the Wagner archives--but are . . . turning everything into a foundation. . . . Of course the newspapers have again written all sorts of lies--foremost the American!"

Wieland Wagner has acknowledged that the finale of Tannhäuser is flawed and found Mayer's proposals excellent, but the revision was not accepted for performance at Bayreuth (Mayer, "The Finalization of Tannhäuser," Music Educators Journal, October 1969).
