"Cincinnati & Covington Suspension Bridge." Arch-topped hand-colored oversize albumen print, 11x15 3/4 inches (28x40 cm.), on an ink-ruled mount, with the C. Waldack & Co. debossed stamp and the title and bridge's dimensions printed on the original label on mount recto. 1866-1867

When this bridge opened to pedestrians in December 1866, the 1,057 foot main span was the longest in the world. Most importantly, it was the first to utilize both vertical suspenders and diagonal stays fanning from either tower. This engineering advance was next seen on the Brooklyn Bridge, which surpassed it as the longest suspension bridge in the world in 1883. Now known as the Roebling Suspension Bridge, it remains a Cincinnati icon.
