Born in St. Louis, Hancock (1901-1998) studied at the School of Fine Arts at Washington University and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia (where he was later an instructor). He furthered his artistic training at the American Academy, having received the Prix de Rome in the 1920s. Hancock is best known for his realistic figure and portrait sculptures and commemorative monuments.
