"Large scale map of the state, which is a lithographic reissue of Borden's 1844 map with updates and additions by Walling"--Rumsey 3959. Ristow (pages 329-331) explains that Walling's effort to revise Borden's map was commissioned by the State in 1855. As the basis for revising the state map, Walling surveyed and published maps of all fourteen Massachusetts counties between 1855 and 1860. Unfortunately, as with the Melish map of Pennsylvania, state sponsorship of the map was not the expected financial gold mine.
