WALTER ALLNER (1909-2006) SUISSE ÉTÉ / WAGONS - LITS // COOK.
39 1/4x24 inches, 99 3/4x61 cm. Omnium Graphique, Paris.
Condition B+: restored losses and overpainting at edges; abrasions in margins and image.
Allner had an exceptional avant-garde, artistic education. He studied at the Bauhaus in Germany under Josef Albers, Kandinsky and Paul Klee, he studied with Otto Neurath in Vienna, worked with Piet Zwart in Holland and with A.M. Cassandre and Jean Carlu in Paris. He moved to America at the end of the 1940s and began working with large corporate clients like Johnson & Johnson, R.C.A., Life magazine and others. In 1962, he became Art Director for Fortune Magazine. This poster, (from his Parisian years, published by his own design company, Omnium Graphique), has a masterful layout, employing both the vertical and diagonal axes, as well as fluently integrating photomontage with graphics.
