WALTER E. SPRADBERY THE PROUD CITY / TEMPLE CHURCH. 1944.
40x25 1/4 inches. Johnson Riddle, London.
Condition A-: minor creases and repaired tears in margins.
One in a series of six posters designed to show "London's survival" during the bombings of World War Two, combining images with passages of poetry and prose. "They were intended to convey in the artist's own words 'the sense that havoc itself is passing and with new days come new hopes'" (Underground p. 97). Here the remains of the Temple Church and Library, in brown, red, yellow and green, are seen still standing amidst the rubble, a rainbow shining overhead and a stanza by Charles Lamb.
