WALTER HERDEG (1908-1995) ST. MORITZ. 1934.
40x251/4 inches.
Condition A-: minor creases at edges; abrasion in image. Paper.
Throughout the 1930's, along with Herbert Matter and Emil Schulthess, Herdeg was an innovator with the use of photomontage in posters. His most famous designs were a series advertising the Swiss resort of St. Moritz. His major contribution to graphic design was publishing the magazine Graphis which, under his direction, spread new graphic design trends around the world for decades. Of his St. Moritz series, most of which include a smiling sun radiating throughout the whole image, generally intertwined with a photograph showing people indulging in one of the many sports offered by this mountain resort, this is the most famous. A striking image, Herdeg has chosen to photograph a diver on the diving board from below. The visual effect is spectacular; a classic. Foto-Plakate p. 124 no. 134.
