In the 1950s Hofmann began to employ, bright, bold almost day-glo colors in his posters. Always eye-catching, when he applied these color schemes to human forms, the results could be jarring. But here, to silhouette varieties of pens, the bright yellow background and the white outlines around the pens, serve to make the image highly visible and direct.
