WALTER M. CADE III (1936 - )
23 L's View to E-4.

Mixed-media collage, 1981. 1181x1500 mm; 46 1/2x59 inches. Signed and dated "3/81" in pencil, lower right recto. Signed, dated "3/81" and inscribed "Dedicated to the missing Black children in Atlanta" in ink, lower left on the frame back.

Provenance: private New York collection.

This is an impressively large and complex collage by a New York City artist known for his construction and painting of urban environments. Early in his career, he was included in important museum shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the 1969 Annual Exhibition: Contemporary American Painting and the 1971 Contemporary Black Artists in America. He then had the inaugural show at the Studio Gallery in Jamaica, NY, with a solo exhibition in 1972. Today, Cade continues this window imagery with mixed media, and has had three solo exhibitions at Sande Webster Gallery in Philadelphia in the past 10 years. This is only the second work by Cade to come to auction; the first was a painting sold at Swann Galleries on February 6, 2007.
