WALTER MORAS
Fischerdorf.

Oil on cardstock mounted on board, circa 1890. 173x285 mm; 6⅞x11¼ inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto.

Provenance: Private collection, New York.

German landscape painter Moras (1856-1925) studied with the painter Hermann Eschke (1823-1900), who specialized in landscape and maritime scenes. It was at Eschke's recommendation that the young Moras traveled to and painted scenes of Mecklenburg, the German state where the small fishing village of Fischerdorf is located. Mecklenburg remained a frequent destination for Moras' painting trips throughout his career.

In 1876 at the age of twenty, Moras staged his first exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin. Thereafter, Moras' works were continually shown at major Berlin art exhibitions. Moras painted en plein-air and was known to simplify forms and detail, thereby softening the overall effect of his images—a technique on display in Fischerdorf.

Moras' paintings can be found in many collections in Germany, including the Nationalgalerie Berlin, the Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie in Regensburg, and the Kulturhistoriches Museum Magdenburg.
