The program for one of the last artistic balls of flamboyant, decadent pre-war Vienna. In June of 1914 (just four months after this event), the assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand launched Europe into the First World War, and the creative years of the Secession movement, and the night life of Austria's artists came to an end. A prominent committee of art professors and designers, including Engelhart, Weisgerber and Schnackenberg organized this Oriental-themed event. Schnackenberg not only designed the program, but also helped with one of the evening's performances, a ballet entitled "in the palace of Rati." The image is one of his archetypal decadent and morbid figures, depicting an almost hypnotizing woman with an improbably sweeping hat and oversized earrings.
