WALTER SCHNACKENBERG (1880-1961)

REGINA PALAST HOTEL / TANZ IN DER BAR. 1932.

34¼x22¾ inches, 87x57¾ cm. Kunst im Druck, Munich.
Condition A: minor restoration in title.

Schnackenberg studied with Franz von Stuck at his academy in Munich, and through his travels, was exposed to the work of Toulouse-Lautrec in Paris. The two artists shared a passion for depicting nightlife, cabarets and performers, yet Schnackenberg's theatrical vision was more attuned to the prevailing German mood than fin-de-siècle Paris. His posters are an incarnation of the extravagance, decadence and morbidity at the center of Weimar-era indulgences. This is one of the artist's later posters; most of his work was done in the 1910s and 20s. Here, his usual view of the Munich demimonde has been replaced, and for this bar and dancehall in a prominent Munich hotel, he shows an elegant couple embraced in a tender sway on the dance floor. They are surrounded by dynamic typography, perhaps emulating some of the neon signs of the era which would have been illuminating and electrifying the city.
