Additional Details

Role-playing was a central aspect of many of Warhol's self-portraits. In 1981 the artist was photographed wearing various wigs and makeup. A video was also produced for 'Andy Warhol's TV on Saturday Night Live.' The photographer Christopher Makos, who was among Warhol's close circle of friends, described the process as a 'Dadaist experiment . . . The point was not drag itself but the altered image. It had nothing to do with trans-sexuality. As you can see: no stuffed bras, no artificial fingernails. Only the face is altered.'
