After serving in the Revolutionary War, Warren (1753-1815) became a leading surgeon in Boston. "His private course of anatomical lectures in 1780-81 led to the establishment of a medical department at Harvard College, November 1782. Warren began service there as professor of anatomy and surgery in 1783" (CDAB). He was the father of John Collins Warren.
