Additional Details

An extraordinary gathering, connected with the National Negro Business League. A visibly exhausted Washington sits, somewhat slumped in his chair. Booker T. Washington, arguably the leading voice of America's more conservative black community died of nephritis on November 14, 1915, less than four months after this photograph was taken. His physicians said that he had literally "worked himself to death." The location of this meeting, Readville, was the recruiting locale for the 54th Massachusetts Regiment.
