Additional Details

rare page of manuscript notes in washington's hand, 40 words, but not signed. It was customary for Washington to make a list of notes for speeches in the form of key-words and short phrases. This list begins: "mind. Reaching masses. What to do with it," followed by "two frogs," "advantages of whites' mistakes," "drift of education," and other phrases. He ends this list with: "Not what is known," "hands in pockets," and "Smart Man." It is believed that Washington addressed his audiences directly using only notes like these as prompts.
