Organized at the end of the Revolution, eligibility to the Society of the Cincinnati was restricted to the officers of the Continental Army. Nathan Goodale served in the Revolution as a Captain of the 5th Massachusetts, was taken prisoner at King's Bridge in 1778, exchanged and served the remainder of the war as a brevet Major in the 1st Massachusetts.<
