Additional Details

"I have been duly honored with your letter dated in Philadelphia, accompanied by one from the Marq[ui]s de la Fayette & another from the Marq[ui]s de Bouille. Whensoever your affairs will induce you to make the visit you propose to Virginia, I shall be happy to be favored with your company at Mount Vernon, & to bestow the attentions due to your merits and their recommendations. I take the liberty of putting under cover to you a letter in acknowledgement of that from the Marq[ui]s de Bouille, which I request you will be pleased to forward to him with your Packets."
Though La Vallée may have visited Mount Vernon, we find no evidence that he ever accepted Washington's invitation. Bouillé (1739-1800) was made by Washington an honorary member of the Society of the Cincinnati in 1787, but he became a staunch royalist during the French Revolution.
