Estimate: $ 50,000 - $ 75,000
WASSILY KANDINSKY
Leier.

Color woodcut printed in the monotype manner on absorbent Japan paper tipped onto the original black wove paper support, 1907. 185x190 mm; 71/4x71/2 inches, small margins, as issued. One of only several impressions. Signed in pencil, lower right, and inscribed (in Cyrillic ?) in pencil, lower left. Ex-collection William A. Hewitt. A superb, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce print.

Roethel cites only 2 impressions: at the Musé National d'Art Moderne, Paris (Legacy Nina Kandinsky) and at the Tretjakov Gallery, Moscow. Another impression, which sold at Sotheby's, London, June, 1997, lot 336, appears to have been printed similarly, only less brightly, to the current impression. We have found only several impressions at auction in the past 20 years. Roethel 53.
