Additional Details

Carleton Watkins was an established landscape photographer who was well known for his images of Yosemite and California. In 1867, with his reputation firmly established and his professional life flourishing Watkins set out to photograph the Columbia River and Oregon. During this time the Columbia River was regarded as a vital aspect of Oregon's financial and economic development. The transportation of goods, as well as people on the many river boats, made it a center of activity. Watkins spent a year traveling up the river banks and through Oregon, taking single images, panoramas, and stereo views. On September 28, 1867 he arrived in Dalles City declaring in the local paper that the view of the town would "make one of the finest pictures of any he has taken."
