Celebrated poet Robert Burns, surrounded by characters and places from his most famous poems, with an inset showing places in Scotland where Burns "spent most of his short life" (Furness vol. 1, p. 177). Born in 1759, Burns achieved immortality by rewriting classic Scottish folk songs, creating poems with his own lyrics, and revitalizing Scottish culture and pride. More widely known for writing the lyrics to the New Year's song "Auld Lang Syne," Burns considered his songs and poems his gift to the Scottish people and never accepted payment for anything he wrote. Scots around the world still celebrate his January 25th birthday each year. Furness vol. 1, p. 177.
