W.E.B. DU BOIS. Illustrated poster for his lectures. Poster, 18 x 12¼ inches; horizontal folds, minor wear including ½-inch repaired tear, soiling to verso. No place, circa 1924

Additional Details

This poster was produced to promote the frequent appearances of Du Bois on the lecture circuit. It describes his numerous lecture appearances and travels "during the last thirty years," and is illustrated with a portrait signed "H.J. Turner /24." We presume that Du Bois would have the date and appearance of his next lecture overprinted or added in manuscript, although this example is unused. We trace no other examples at auction or in OCLC.

The original portrait used for this poster was by illustration artist Harold J. Turner (1884-1966). It was originally commissioned for a 13 April 1924 dinner held in Du Bois's honor at New York's Café Savarin after he returned from the Pan-African Congress. Turner's original drawing, the dinner program, and Du Bois's 22 April 1924 letter of thanks to Turner are all held in the W.E.B. Du Bois Papers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Regarding the drawing, Du Bois remarked: "Considering the subject, you did remarkably well."
