Inscribed to one of his teachers, the Headmaster of Phillips Exeter, where he briefly attended before going on to Dartmouth.
Printed on the etching, at bottom, is a note that the engraving is from a daguerrotype by M.P. Simons. Pfister, in Facing the Light, indicates that this daguerrotype is no longer extant (p. 358, plate c).
