WEIMER PURSELL (1906-1974) AMERICAN AIRLINES / TO NEW YORK. 1956.
39 1/2x29 1/4 inches, 100 1/4x74 1/4 cm.
Condition B: airbrushing in upper text; repaired tears and small losses at edges; creases and abrasions in image.
Abstracted skyscrapers, shop windows, traffic-filled streets and the hustle-and-bustle of New York City life are all represented in this high energy street scene - exemplary of classic American graphic Modernism. Pursell designed several highly-regarded posters for the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, as well as World War II propaganda posters (most memorably, "When You Ride Alone You Ride With Hitler!") and an image for Winchester Rifles. This figurative representation is reminiscent in color and style of Erik Nitsche's 1947 poster, Say It Fast . . . Often . . . In Color / Subway Posters. Airways p. 119.
