first edition. number 31 of 200 copies. inscribed and initialed by wescott to paul and eslanda "essie" robeson "in the summer it was written." Wescott met Robeson in France in the 1920s and they traveled in the same circles in New York's Greenwich Village in the 1940s and `50s. Inscribed by Wescott again at a later date to his New Jersey neighbor Jane Engelhard, explaining his previous inscription to the Robesons.
