The inscription reads: "Had the pleasure of visiting Edward Weston when I bought this picture. Carmel, California. March 15, 1930."
From Louis Roland Hawkins (1879-1960); by descent to the present owner. Hawkins was the personal secretary and companion to Mary Stillwell Harkness, the wife of philanthropist Edward S. Harkness (an early stockholder in Standard Oil of New Jersey). The pair traveled the world, and collected art from the diverse locations they visited.
