Curator Amy Conger notes that "Weston's eye for walls with interesting forms and textures had been intensified in Mexico in 1926 when he photographed pulquerias. In this wall from 1934 the primitive figurative paintings that nominally justified the earlier studies were omitted; the emphasis upon texture, tone and chance shows that Weston, like some east coast surrealist painters, was also on a road that could lead to abstract expressionism."
