Additional Details

Jeffers is best known for his intense poetry relating to the central Californian coast written in narrative, epic, and short verse formats. Often comparing man to the wild, rugged outdoors, and finding humans and civiilization lacking, Jeffers termed his central philosophy "inhumanism." After World War II his work became increasingly controversial, however he is considered an influence on many contemporary poets, and an icon of the environmentalist movement. This interest in the natural environment ties him inextricably with many Californian photographers, including Weston, Ansel Adams, and Morley Baer.
