In addition to his strong, geometric graphic style, Kauffer was also a landscape painter (there were two exhibitions of his paintings in 1931 and 1933). Some of his watercolors and gouaches were suitable for "posterization". In the series of landscape posters commissioned by Shell, several of Kauffer's images were used. The dark and mysterious atmosphere in this poster must have held a special appeal for Kauffer, as he used a similar treatment and palette for Shell posters showing Stonehenge and Rodiam Castle.
