WHITFIELD LOVELL (1959 - )
Untitled (Blue Bird).

Charcoal and paper collage on wood panel, 2001. 545x260 mm; 11 1/2x10 1/4 inches. Signed and dated in ink on the verso.

Provenance: DC Moore Gallery, New York, with the gallery label verso; private collection.

To create this series of portraits, Whitfield Lovell drew from a personal archive of approximately 600 studio photographs of anonymous African Americans, most dating from the first half of the 20th century. His drawings, collages and series of installations, which have achieved national acclaim, all derive from these tintypes, cabinet cards, bubble-glass portraits, and postcards. His work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the National Museum of American Art in Washington, DC, the Seattle Art Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT.
