This large-scale drawing is an excellent, early example of Whitfield Lovell's combining of iconic imagery and portraiture. The artist first created large-scale drawings in charcoal and oil stick during his Skowhegan residency in 1985. With this 1994-1996 series, he received a prestigious grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation in 1996, and went on to have his first solo exhibiton at DC Moore Gallery in 1997.
