Additional Details

"I shall try to look in at the De Soto & see you. Next week, or week after, I leave for Washington. Frederick McReady is promoted to Captain. I have seen his commission."
The USS De Soto was a wooden steamer employed as a gunboat during the Civil War. The ship was sent for repairs from Portsmouth, NH, to Baltimore, MD, on January 12, 1865. "De Soto" might also have referred to a hotel; at the time of writing, a hotel by this name was active in Savannah, GA.
Beginning September 12, 1861, Frederick B. McReady served in Company "G" of the New York 51st Infantry. He was promoted to Captain on October 13, 1864.
