Additional Details

The late 1950's was a period of international success for Lam, and he continued to travel to Latin American from his base in Paris, and exhibit internationally both solo and with his magical surrealist cohorts. In 1955 Lam met, and started to pursue romantically, Swedish artist Lou Laurin, who would become his third wife in 1960. Lam's critical acclaim spread to Sweden with several landmark exhibitions, and he would regularly visit the country after their marriage. The 1950's was also a pivotal decade for Lam because he started to separate himself from his contemporaries and formulate an identity outside of this group. His style moved towards primitism, and incorporated elements and symbols from European and African art.
