WILHELM HARTZ INTERNATIONALE PHOTOGRAPHISCHE AUSSTELLUNG. 1909. 38x241/4 inches. Condition B: replaced top margin; restored losses, overpainting and creases in margins; creases in image. We do not know when Hartz was born, nor when he died. The only thing that we do know is that he was active in Dresden, became a member of the Deutsche Werkbund in 1913 and was a professor in Düsseldorf. This classic image is his only known poster; with a peacock-like bird at the top, it's wings spread, and well organized typography beneath. The relationship between the image, which is far more Art Nouveau than photographic, and photography is unclear. DFP-III 1187.
