Additional Details

Will Barnet's Cat and Canary lithograph, for which this drawing is a study for, was printed in 1971 by Mourlot, New York and published by Associated American Artists (see Szoke 147).

Barnet's works of the 1970's were particularly imaginative. His incorporation of the repeating pattern of the mosaic floor to counter the smoothness of the cat's coat is a similar device which he used in his 1970 lithograph, Dialogue in Green, the 1971 screenprint Soliloquy, and in later works. The floor pattern also works to flatten the composition and brings both the cat and the canary to the foreground.
