This work is a study for the 1984 oil on canvas The Blue Thread, in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C. It also relates to an earlier 1980 oil painting The Golden Thread illustrated in Will Barnet, Robert Doty, Harry N. Abrams, Inc, New York, 1984, page 146. It depicts the artist's cat with the hands of the artist's daughter, Ona Barnet, knitting.
