WILLIAM ANDERSON (1932 - )
Joann by the Window.

Silver print on matte fiber paper, 1986. 425x286 mm; 16 3/4x11 1/4 inches, full margins. Signed and dated "7/27/05" in ink on the verso.

Reminiscent of the photographs of Walker Evans, William Anderson's photographs depict African Americans in the rural South. Anderson was born in Selma, AL during the Great Depression. He began his career as a sculptor, but when he was dissatisfied with how others photographed his artwork, he began taking his own pictures. Another impression of this photograph can be found in the collection of the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven. Today, Anderson's photographs are in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, the Princeton University Photography Collection and the Hampton Museum at Hampton University, VA.
