North Carolina-born Blackburn (1908-1993) studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia and the Grand Central Art School in New York, as well as in Paris and Florence. Influenced by Regionalism, particularly the work of Thomas Hart Benton, his rural scenes often depicted African Americans.
