Bradford (1823-1892) was a Romantic landscape painter and explorer from Fairhaven, Massachusetts, near New Bedford. He went on several Arctic expeditions and was the first American artist to depict the region. His representations of landscapes with natural light connect him with contemporaneous 19th century landscape painters from the Hudson River School, such as Thomas Cole (see lot 5) and Frederic Edwin Church.
