WILLIAM BRIDGES
Map of the City of New-York and Island of Manhattan; with Explanatory Remarks and References. New York, 1811. 54-page pamphlet. 8vo, later 3/4 dyed and polished calf gilt, worn at edges; wide-margined interior quite clean with only minor foxing.

Additional Details

This is the text issued to accompany Bridge's scarce 6-sheet map of Manhattan which was sold separately. Stokes locates only 10 known copies of the map, and OCLC identifies only 9 institutional copies of the pamphlet. Known as the Commissioner's Plan, this report details the proposed grid layout of the streets. With only minor changes, it is essentially the same city plan as the current Manhattan. Also included in this pamphlet are the references to the map and the list of subscribers. Stokes III, pages 542-549; Sabin 7825.
