WILLIAM DODGE STEVENS TEAMWORK BUILDS SHIPS. Circa 1918.
331/4x461/4 inches.
Condition B+: creases and restoration in margins and lower right corner; vertical fold. Trimmed at bottom.
An intense, dramatic image of men in blue, brown and green laboring on the hull of a ship, glowing orange like molten metal. "Concentrated human energy," (Paret p. 80) emphasizing American industrial power in its rawest form. Issued by the U.S. Shipping Board, an entity formed in 1916 to restore greatness to America's merchant marine fleet. The image is a precursor to the industrial photographs of the following decade in which work by Lewis Hine and Margaret Bourke-White captured the same intensity and power within the factories of America. Rawls p. 76, Theofiles 256, Borkan p. 53.
