WILLIAM E. DASSONVILLE (1879-1957)
Ship Deck II. Silver print on Dassonville Charcoal Black paper, the image measuring 7½x10 inches (19x25.4 cm.), with Dassonville's penciled border on recto and his Estate stamp and the title and negative date in pencil in an unknown hand on verso. Circa 1925

Provenance: From the Collection of Donald Dassonville, the artist's son; to the Collection of Dr. James and Debra Pearl

In the 1920s, Dassonville shifted his focus to San Francisco's waterfront, skyline, and architecture. These impressionist images were printed on his own "Charcoal Black" paper. In response to the shortage of platinum printing paper with the onset of World War I, Dassonville, who was a self-taught chemist, developed an alternative paper coating that had the tonal intricacy of platinum that was heralded by Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, and many others.
