WILLIAM EARL JOHNS (1893-1968) FLY THERE / IMPERIAL AIRWAYS. 1930. 29 1/2x19 1/4 inches, 75x49 cm. Condition B+: overpainting along repaired tears through right margin. Matted and framed. The Short Calcutta flying boat, depicted here, was "used on the Brindisi-Athens-Alexandria flights across the Mediterranean until 1936, when larger and more modern flying boats replaced them on that section of the Imperial Airways route from London to India" (Airlines p. 32). The artist is best known as the author of the inimitable British books featuring the World War I flying ace James Bigglesworth-- affectionately known around the world as Biggles.
